When a recording is challenged, the answer already exists
The problem
Generative AI has made it easier to claim a video was altered. The usual answer is an outside forensic expert who starts from the file you have and works backward. That's slow and expensive, and the expert can only speak to what they were given.
What's already done
On every in-person job we record, Media Preservation runs the same day: master cards are imaged to E01 forensic files, every file is SHA-256 hashed, and the hash manifest is timestamped. The values exist from the day of the deposition.
What you get
A signed report listing the equipment, the imaging process, and the hash value of each master image and each delivered file, with the timestamp proofs, executed under penalty of perjury. Anyone can recompute a file's hash with tools built into Windows or macOS and compare it with the report.
What it shows
A matching hash shows a file is identical to the one we preserved. It doesn't speak to what the testimony means, and admissibility is the court's call.
